Boom-Lift Breaks free from trailer killing one

A 59-year-old Buffalo resident was killed in Madison County on Friday morning when a large piece of construction equipment fell from a tractor-trailer and smashed into the victim’s vehicle, officials said.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, Dusniel Gonzalez, 33, of Miami, Florida, was traveling southbound on Interstate 45 in Madison County around 5 a.m. He was hauling large construction equipment, including a boom lift. Just 10 miles north of Madisonville, his tractor-trailer went off the road and smashed into a cable bar in the center median. He tried to correct the truck, but lost control of the vehicle, which swerved across the road. The boom lift secured in his trailer broke free and fell into the path of oncoming southbound traffic. Marcus Harrison, a 59-year-old Buffalo man, had been traveling behind Gonzalez in a Ford pickup and slammed into the boom lift. Though Gonzalez wsa not injured, Harrison was pronounced dead at the scene an hour later.

U.S. 45 was closed southbound temporarily and traffic was diverted to the access road, though the interstate is back open to motorists. No charges or citations have been issued against Gonzalez, but the case is still under investigation.
