A construction worker died after falling eight stories at a condo complex in Ormond Beach on Thursday morning, according to the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office.
The accident happened at Aquarius Condos on Ocean Shore Boulevard before 11 a.m.
Daniel L. Freeman, 37, of Winter Haven was working on storm shutters outside the eighth floor of the building when he fell, according to the Sheriff’s Office. Deputies said he was harnessed to the roof of the building but the equipment also fell to the ground.
A 911 caller reported the incident, saying the man fell about 10 stories. The building is 10 stories tall.
“We just had a fall next to Tom Renick Park,” the caller said. “A man just fell one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten stories down.”
The 911 caller can be heard telling others, “he’ll be OK” and asking if anyone could perform CPR.
Catherine Mead witnessed the accident on Thursday.
“One guy was able to, you can see him pulling up. The other guy was hanging, and he only hung by one arm. And we were like oh please, get over and pull him, and he did. But, then we heard there was a third person there and that’s what the horrific noise we heard,” Mead said.
“We heard the scaffolding going down but then you heard like thump. I mean you couldn’t mistake it,” Mead said.
At this time, there are no criminal charges pending because investigators believe the man’s death was an accident.
